Glasgow is, by most measures, one of the best cities in the world for nightlife. This is not a hometown boast – it is a regular finding of European club culture surveys and a consistent opinion of DJs who play here and then go home and talk about it. As a student in Glasgow, you have access to this from day one. Use it wisely.
Sub Club, Jamaica Street
One of the most important clubs in the world. Sub Club has been running since 1987 and has maintained a standard that most clubs couldn’t achieve for a single year. The Saturday night Subculture residency – the world’s longest-running club night – brings artists of international significance to a basement that holds around 400 people. The sound system is legendary in the literal sense: people travel to Glasgow specifically to stand in it. Entry is affordable on a student budget (typically £10–15). This is not a club you attend as a tourist; it’s one that becomes part of what Glasgow means to you.
SWG3, Eastvale Place
A multi-space arts complex and club venue in the West End that has grown into one of the most interesting venues in Scotland. SWG3 books across genres – electronic, hip-hop, grime, indie – in several different room configurations ranging from intimate to festival-scale. The outdoor space in summer hosts some of the city’s best events. Student nights here offer excellent value because the quality of the bookings is consistently high regardless of price point.
Polo Lounge, Wilson Street
Glasgow’s most established LGBTQ+ venue and a genuinely welcoming, inclusive club space for everyone. The Polo runs consistently good nights with a commercial-leaning programme that reliably fills the floor. Central Merchant City location, good prices, and an atmosphere that reflects Glasgow’s warmth at its most concentrated.
The Garage, Sauchiehall Street
The student-night standard of Glasgow clubbing. The Garage has multiple floors, cheap drinks on student nights, and a consistently packed dancefloor. The music is commercial rather than specialist but the energy is excellent and the prices are right for a mid-week or early-in-the-year budget. Every Glasgow student goes through a Garage phase and few regret it.
The ABC, Sauchiehall Street
Live music and club nights in a Victorian theatre setting. The ABC programmes across genres – the club nights range from indie to electronic – and the venue capacity means it handles touring acts that wouldn’t suit a smaller space. A good option when you want a night out with some production value but don’t want to spend Sub Club entry prices.
