Ox and Finch, Sauchiehall Street
Primarily known for its evening sharing plates, Ox and Finch’s weekend brunch is one of Glasgow’s most satisfying mid-morning meals. The menu takes the sharing-plate philosophy into brunch territory – smaller portions of thoughtfully made food, rotating with the season, designed to be eaten with coffee and other people. The eggs dishes are excellent; the pastry selection changes regularly. A treat-yourself Saturday that earns its place in the week.
Singl-end, Garnethill
The best bakery-cafe combination in Glasgow and arguably the best single place for breakfast in the city. Singl-end bakes its own bread, makes its own pastries, and produces excellent coffee in a setting that manages to be cosy despite the city-centre location. The avocado on sourdough here is genuinely good rather than a checkbox item. The queues on weekend mornings are long and move slowly and are completely worth it.
Piece Bakery, Various Locations
A Glasgow-born bakery chain that maintains quality across its branches. The morning bun is genuinely world-class – flakey, buttery, properly laminated. Coffee is treated seriously. A Piece morning is a reliable pleasure in a city that values reliability as much as it values quality.
The Grosvenor Cafe, Ashton Lane
Old school Ashton Lane cafe that does a breakfast exactly as it should be done. No reinvention of the concept, no avocado toast on the menu – a full cooked breakfast made properly from good ingredients at honest prices. The setting – cobbled lane, Glasgow’s West End, mornings before the lane fills with evening crowds – is a specific Glasgow pleasure.
Cafezique, Gibson Street
Neighbourhood cafe standard that has been anchoring Gibson Street for years. The breakfasts are generous and the coffee is better than the price suggests. A go-to for West End residents and students who want a relaxed morning meal without a reservation.
