Best Student Areas Glasgow

The area around the University of Glasgow campus is the natural centre of student life in Glasgow. Victorian terraces, good transport, proximity to Byres Road and Great Western Road’s independent shops and restaurants. Hillhead Underground station connects you to the city centre in twelve minutes. The area is genuinely beautiful – the West End’s architecture is consistently impressive – and the student population density means you’re surrounded by people in the same life situation. The downside: rent is higher than areas further from the city, and Hillhead can feel insular if you don’t push out into the wider city.

Immediately north of the Clyde and south of the West End. Partick is where West End students who want slightly lower rent end up, and the transition from Hillhead to Partick is gradual enough that you barely notice you’ve crossed the boundary. Good local pubs, the Partick Underground, and access to both the West End and the South Side. A sensible choice that combines affordability with location quality.

Shawlands, Pollokshields, and the broader South Side have become increasingly popular with students who want more space for less money and don’t mind a slightly longer commute. The South Side has excellent independent food and coffee culture (Shawlands Main Street is genuinely good), Pollok Country Park nearby, and a more mixed community than the student-heavy West End. The Underground connects the South Side to the city centre reliably. An increasingly confident student choice.

Argyle Street through Finnieston has Glasgow’s highest concentration of excellent restaurants and bars. Living here as a student is expensive but the location means your social life is world-class from the front door. Better suited to second and third-years who have budgeted carefully and want to upgrade their environment.
