Student Pubs Near Strathclyde and Caledonian Glasgow

The best pubs for Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian students. The city centre circuit that works.

Strathclyde University sits on George Street near the Cathedral and Glasgow Caledonian is on Cowcaddens Road. Both campuses are in or very close to the city centre, which means the full range of Glasgow drinking options is immediately accessible rather than confined to a student bubble.

01 Babbity

Babbity Bowster, Blackfriars Street

One of Glasgow’s most characterful pubs and close enough to the Strathclyde campus to become a regular haunt. Babbity Bowster on Blackfriars Street in the Merchant City has good Scottish food, a selection of Scottish beers, and a beer garden that fills up in good weather. The folk music sessions are a genuinely authentic part of Glasgow pub culture. Slightly more expensive than a standard student pub but not ruinously so, and the quality justifies it.

02 Griffin

The Griffin, Bath Street

The Griffin on Bath Street is a classic Glasgow bar – big, slightly dark, reliably busy, and serving cheap pints without ceremony. A 10-minute walk from both campuses, it sits on the edge of the theatre district and attracts a genuinely mixed crowd of students, theatre-goers, and city workers. Good for large groups without a booking. The dark wood interior and old-fashioned bar fittings give it the feel of a proper Glasgow pub rather than a constructed one.

03 Merchant

The Merchant City Pub Circuit

The Merchant City area between the campuses and the east end of the city centre has a cluster of bars covering various price points. The Counting House on George Square (a Wetherspoons in a magnificent banking hall), Bar Soba on Wilson Street, and Cafe Gandolfi on Albion Street all provide different options within easy reach of both campuses. The Merchant City is also the base for Glasgow’s weekend market culture.

04 Ivory

Ivory Blacks, Oswald Street

A live music venue in the city centre that attracts students across all the Glasgow universities. Regular club nights and live bookings throughout the week. Entry is typically cheap and the music policy covers indie, rock, and alternative genres. A reliable option for students who want live music rather than a standard club night.

05 Strathclyde

Strathclyde Students Union Bar, John Street

On campus and the obvious starting point for Strathclyde students. The cheapest drinks in the immediate area and a regular programme of events. The union building has multiple facilities including food outlets and common spaces worth knowing about beyond just the bar.
