Glasgow is a large enough city that student employment is genuinely available across most sectors. The key is finding work that fits around a degree rather than competing with it. Here is where to look efficiently in 2026.
University Job Portals
The University of Glasgow’s Career Development Service lists student employment opportunities on its website. These campus-affiliated roles are specifically designed for students and the employers understand term-time availability. Roles include library assistants, research assistant positions, student ambassador work, IT support, and admin roles. The jobs are advertised rolling through the year and competition for the better ones is real – apply early in the semester rather than waiting. Strathclyde and GCU have equivalent job portals through their respective careers services.
Hospitality on Byres Road and Finnieston
The concentration of bars and restaurants on Byres Road, Great Western Road, and Argyle Street in Finnieston hires heavily from the student population. Bar and floor staff roles are the most common entry point. The Finnieston restaurant scene in particular pays reasonably well and some of the busier venues pay above-average tips. Walk in with a CV on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon and ask for the manager – weekend approaches when venues are at full operational pace are rarely productive.
Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street Retail
The main Glasgow shopping streets and the Buchanan Galleries have most of the major retail chains. Christmas temp contracts from October through December are the standard entry point and often extend to regular part-time contracts. Major retailers including Zara, H&M, and the Buchanan Galleries food court all hire student workers regularly.
Scottish Event Campus (SEC)
The SEC complex on the Clyde hosts major concerts, conferences, and exhibitions throughout the year. Event staff agencies including Adecco recruit for casual work covering these events at above minimum wage. The work is intermittent rather than regular but the hourly rate is good and the events are often interesting. Register with agencies in September rather than waiting for individual event announcements.
Deliveroo and Cycle Delivery
Deliveroo coverage across the West End, city centre, and Southside is dense and bicycle delivery is practical given Glasgow’s relatively flat terrain in the central areas. Pay in busy periods is above minimum wage. The flexibility suits students with irregular lecture schedules and the physical side provides exercise as a bonus.
