Student Housing Glasgow: West End vs Partick vs Finnieston

The West End is the closest area to the University of Glasgow campus and the most expensive student housing zone. Streets in Hillhead and Hyndland have Victorian tenements that convert to well-maintained student flats. Rents are typically £600-750 per month for a room in a shared flat in 2026. The proximity to Byres Road – with its cafes, bars, and independent shops – is the main selling point. Walking to lectures takes under 20 minutes from most Hillhead addresses. The area has a mixed population of students, young professionals, and established West End residents, which gives it a less exclusively student feel than some other university areas. Popular with students who want to live in the heart of Glasgow student culture and do not mind paying for it.

Partick is the more affordable option directly adjacent to the West End. Dumbarton Road runs through Partick with a good selection of shops, cafes, and pubs. Rents are typically £100-150 per month less than equivalent West End properties. The Subway at Partick station connects quickly to the city centre and Hillhead. The area has a strong local community identity and feels more rooted than the student-heavy streets of Hillhead. Popular with students in their second and third years who have assessed the full picture and decided the savings are worth the slightly longer walk. Very well connected to the Clydeside Expressway running path and the River Clyde for morning runs.

Finnieston on Argyle Street has been one of Glasgow’s most gentrified areas over the past decade and is now one of the best places to eat and drink in the city. The bar and restaurant density on and around Argyle Street – The Butchershop Bar and Grill, Ox and Finch, Porter and Rye, and various others – is exceptional by any standard. Rents are slightly higher than Partick but lower than the core West End. The Subway at Kelvinhall is the closest station. Popular with students who care about their immediate social environment and food access. A bit further from the main University of Glasgow campus than Hillhead but manageable on the Subway.

Scottish tenancy law is different from English law. The Private Residential Tenancy is the standard for most student lets and has specific protections including no no-fault eviction. Deposits must be held by the Tenancy Deposit Scheme Scotland. Check that your landlord is registered with their local council – this is a legal requirement in Scotland for all private landlords.
