Glasgow is one of the more affordable UK cities for eating out. The combination of a genuine pub food culture that values portion size, a strong fast food tradition, and a cluster of cheap independent options in the West End means students can eat well without significant expenditure.
Byres Road Independents
The concentration of independent food businesses on and around Byres Road provides options for every budget. Roots and Fruits on Great Western Road does the best value fresh food in the West End. The various bakeries and sandwich shops along Byres Road cover lunch from £4-6. The Ubiquitous Chip on Ashton Lane is more expensive but does a good value set lunch. Check the boards at the front.
Stereo, Renfield Lane
Stereo on Renfield Lane in the city centre is a vegan cafe, bar, and music venue that somehow manages to do all three well. The food menu is cheap for Glasgow city centre standards – a main typically comes to £8-10. The atmosphere is relaxed and the downstairs space is a reliable spot for a quiet lunch. Popular with students from all the city’s universities for good reason.
The Barras Market Area, Calton
The Barras is Glasgow’s famous weekend market in the east end. The surrounding area on London Road and Gallowgate has a concentration of cheap traditional cafes and takeaways that represent old Glasgow food culture at its most direct. A fry-up breakfast at one of the Barras-area cafes costs around £5-6 and is substantial. Worth the short trip east on a Saturday morning.
Greggs and the Bakery Circuit
Not a glamorous recommendation but a practical one. Greggs on Sauchiehall Street and the surrounding chains – Subway, various bakeries – provide lunch for £3-5. Glasgow’s high street has dense competition at this price point which keeps quality acceptable. The Greggs on Byres Road is an institution of sorts.
Chinese Buffets, City Centre
The lunchtime all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets on Sauchiehall Street and in the city centre are exceptional student value. Around £7-9 for unlimited food at lunch. The Lychee Oriental and several others run regular lunch buffets. Fill up properly before an afternoon of lectures for under a tenner.
Self-Catering from Aldi and Lidl
Aldi on Byres Road and Lidl on the Dumbarton Road serve the West End student population. Weekly shopping for one comes to £25-30. The Maryhill Road Aldi is an option for students in the north of the West End. Quality is reliably better than price suggests across both.
